Scripture: Philippians 4:8
The word “amusement” actually comes from the prefix “a-“, which means “no”, and “muse”, which means “to think”. The idea communicated in that word is “no thinking”, which is exactly what we seek to do with our entertainment. We want something passive that we don’t have to think hard about or put much effort towards, because our lives are so full of effort and thinking.
But as wise believers, we must realize that even our amusement has an impact on who we are.
Entertainment may seem harmless, but it is formative. Even what we consume for “relaxation” shapes us. The world constantly offers narratives, morals, and values that quietly train our thinking.
Christians must not be naive about formation. We are being shaped daily. The only question is whether we are being shaped more by culture or by Christ.
Questions:
- What forms of entertainment most shape your imagination?
- Do they align with Philippians 4:8?
- How might you replace lesser influences with better ones?
