Scripture: 1 Peter 1:13
“Gird up the loins of your mind.”
In ancient times, men wore tunics that would sometimes reach down to the knee. These tunics were great for every day tasks, but when it came time to do hard work, these knee-length garments could really get in the way (as many of you ladies know well).
Men in ancient societies would wear belts that could be used to tie these garments up and get them out of the way so the hard work could be done. This was called “girding up the loins”. So, when we find this phrase in the Bible, it is a call to action.
Preparation precedes obedience. If your mind is cluttered and distracted, holiness will always feel out of reach.
To gird up your mind means to remove hindrances and prepare for spiritual action. It means clarity. Sobriety. Intentionality.
Holiness is not accidental. It is the product of a prepared mind.
Questions:
- What distractions are cluttering your thinking?
- What would “mental readiness” look like in your daily life?
- What practical step can you take to prepare your mind for obedience?
